Post Interview Reflection

Q1. How did you hear about your current job?
She wanted to leave her current corporate job and move to something smaller and more stable. Had her name on every job posting website just patiently waiting for a position to open up for a spot for marketing for a university. She applied to V but they wanted someone with Higher End experience rather than the wide range of Marketing experience that NC has.

Q2: Why did you choose to work at PS University?
NC’s entire marketing career has been in corporate companies who just cares about the money and not the welfare of their employees. Even though she was making a great income and got to travel the world, it became a very stressful career when she started having a family.  She had always wanted to work for a university and make a difference in a smaller community. She was always used to hearing about how well their stocks were doing but never got to see how real people were affected by her work. Working for her alumna mater was just the cherry on top!

Q3: Was marketing always your first career choice?
NC had originally wanted to be in advertising since she was a child from watching Who’s the boss. She started in advertising and realized it was not for her. She was stressed out all the time from clients hounding her with new updates and harsh deadlines. It was a very cut throat and unfriendly environment and she decided she wanted to be more on the marketing side of it.

Q4: What are some of your day-to-day tasks here?
Her day-to-day tasks includes but are not limited to monitoring PS University's social media accounts, marketing vendors, website content.

Q5:What communication do you have with UPark? If so about what?
She talks to UPark very frequently from ideas like new digital marketing, PR, story ideas, creating new website content, and crisis communications.

Q7: Who do you communicate with regularly(internally and externally)?
Communicates with different offices at PS like admissions and career development, the PS team.

Q8: What are some typical marketing messages you write for your job?
Targeting ads, Google ads, Social media, Emails, Radio spots scripts, News stories, Flyers, Press releases, Content newsletters, and commercials.

Q9: Who would you say is your main focus group when marketing PS?
Her main focus group when marketing PS is to admissions of potential and transfer students.
→(Follow up) Why are transfer students important to PS?
Transfer students are important because as some sophomores move into UPark, there needs to be students to fill the gap going into junior and senior year.

Q10: What do you love most about your job?
She loves the close knit campus of PS and the connection you have with the students. Being a graduate from PS also helps to keep her enthusiastic and positive while working.

Reflection
I enjoyed this interview and felt as though I learned a lot from NC about the field of marketing. NC works as a marketing director at PS University. Since I already know NC I wasn’t too anxious but there was still a nervous state in the back of my mind remembering to be professional and get the best answers I could out of NC. I started the interview by asking NC questions about her background and life before her current job. These questions opened her up for the rest of the interview. I tried to make all my questions flow so that she was not blindsided or taken off guard by the next question. If I asked her a follow up question I made sure it transitioned easily into the next set of questions so there was no awkward pauses. A specific question I asked that had a good response from NC was question number 5. She opened up about her communication with UPark and surprised me with one of her answers.Crisis communication is a major part of marketing and something not many people think about. If something happens at the University whether it be a big or small tragic event it has to be addressed in a certain manner. PR statements are written and published to ensure the people of PS that everything will be okay. This is something never thought of that was part of the job. A question that didn’t work out so well was question number 9, I felt as though it was repetitive. Her answer was too similar to questions numbers 4 through 8 and did not give me any new information. I would change question 9 to something more specific about her marketing techniques when writing business messages. E-mail is the main communication used for internal and external communication. NC emails UPark daily about new ideas, dilemmas, and any crisis that may arise. She emails her co-workers and bosses at PS about staff meetings, the social media pages, new ideas, and permission. She communicates most with her internal staff and oversees the communication with external sources. After this interview I have learned a lot about the field of marketing and what business messages are written and used.
